CNES appoints VEGA to develop Venus Products Data
Server
11 December 2009 – VEGA Technologies SAS
(VEGA), a Finmeccanica company, has been commissioned by the French
National Space Agency (CNES) to design and develop the Venµs
Products Data Server (VPDS).
Venμs is a Franco-Israeli earth observation
satellite designed to provide data for scientific studies on
monitoring, analysis and modelling of continental surfaces,
functioning under the influence of environmental factors and human
activity. The VPDS will provide an interface between the
distribution and development of data products stemming from this
mission, and will be the visible part of the acquisition chain and
data processing of Venμs, which is scheduled to launch in 2012.
Data distribution is managed through a
series of web pages allowing requests to be made in the Venμs Image
Processing (VIP) catalogue, of which VEGA is responsible for the
development, assembly, installation, and warranty. The results of
these VIP requests provide access to an order form and various
products which can be ordered and delivered via an FTP server.
Products are also directly visible on the FTP server as they are
produced. This system is fully integrated with the modules of VIP
release.
The community interest is assured through
some important editorial functions, allowing scientists using data
from the Venμs mission, to exchange news, publications, and
information about the algorithms or products available, thus
enabling greater interaction between scientists.
VEGA Technologies SAS Managing Director,
Michel Austruy, said: “This contract, combined with the recent win
of Geoland, builds upon the expertise that VEGA has developed from
the ongoing VIP project, and reflects the trust that CNES has in
VEGA in the domain of earth observation ground segments. It also
further enhances our Space ground segment and science algorithm
expertise.”
